or "'Maracuya , Parcha (spanish)", or "'Maracujá (portuguese)" is a plant cultivated commercially in most areas for its delicious juicy fruit.
It is native to South America and widely grown in India, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, California, Florida, Hawaii, Australia, East Africa, Israel and South Africa.
The passion fruit is now grown around the world, and sizable wild populations now occur in Asia, Australia, and Hawaii.
Passionfruit is a climbing vine with attractive green foliage and beautiful white & purple flowers. The vine grows best in full sun with the assistance of a trellis and is an easy plant to grow.
The passion fruit is a subtropical to tropical vine. A vigorous vine, especially in the tropics, the passion fruit can grow over 20ft in a single year. In Hawaii, the passion fruit tends to grow wild above 1000ft. The Passion fruit vine will produce fruits after just 1 year of growth.
Individual flowers bloom for just 12-24 hours before closing. The flowers will self-pollinate and are followed by green fruit, turning purple when ripe. Fruits usually ripen from flowering in around 80 days. The vines love full sun except in climates where the temperature is excessively hot, then the Passion Fruit vines need relief from the hot sun and should be given some shade. They like a good Water frequently, however they require good drainage. Plants are short-lived, usually maintaining good productivity for 4-6 years, however some plants have been known if pruned correctly to produce 10 years +.
The passion fruit is round to oval dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, very juicy interior filled with numerous bright orange coloured pulp surrounding the seeds. The Passion Fruits are best eaten when wrinkles appear on their surface.
Fresh passion fruit is a very nutritious fruit known to be high in Vitamin A, Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), Potassium and dietary fibre.
Passion fruit juice or syrup is an essential ingredient of some cocktails particularly the hurricane and the Peruvian maracuya sour.
It is also used to flavour soft drinks such as Schweppes Sparkling Granadilla and numerous cordial drinks.
The juicy pulp covered seeds are famously used in numerous recipes including Pavlova , meringues, cheesecake, Vanilla slice, mousse, syrups for dessert, used to decorate the tops of cakes, slices and pies ,eaten raw with ice cream or just enjoyed fresh on their own.
The purple varieties of the fruit reportedly have traces of cyanogenic glycosides in the skin, and hence are mildly poisonous. However, the thick, hard skin is hardly edible.
