Juçara (Euterpe Edulis) is the sister species of Açaí. It has the nickname Açái do sul in Brazil, or Açai of the south, because of its hardiness in colder weather, frost resistant. Perfect for the Sub-tropics.
Traditionally grown for palm hearts production, it is gaining popularity as an anti-oxidant rich and nutritious fruit producer.
Euterpe Edulis or Jucara produces a dark purple berry, as potent as açai. Some enthusiasts claim it is even more potent.
Juçara like Açai is also grown for the harvesting of the palm heart. The species are similar in appearance and can cross pollinate.
Cold HardinessOur seeds for these plants are collected from southern Brazil in Santa Catarina, where unlike the tropical amazon, there are distinct seasons. Coconuts and the traditional açai aren’t common in this region because of the cool weather that can persist for weeks and even rare frosts. It is a must try in climates like Sydney, Australia and southern Europe.
It is also better adapted for higher elevations. We have seeds from the highlands, a quite different location than the Amazon estuary that gives us the regular acai.

Used widely by the native Australian Aboriginals as an important Bush Food Tucker. Red berries look great in salads for added striking colour.
It has been commercially cultivated to a limited extent in Australia as a cool season punnet fruit
Weed Risk : There is concern that R. probus could become a rampant environmental weed, similar to blackberry, when grown outside of its natural range.

This is an attractive fast growing legume tree native to Central and South America.
Grows very well and fast and is extremely hardy to most conditions even frosts. Thrives in the sub - tropics and even in cool temperate climates.
The Ice Cream Bean is an extremely attractive, very large tree. It boasts a vast canopy of spreading branches and lovely showy white and yellow pompom type flowers.
The pods look similar to a tamarind pod but with a fury velvet like cover. The pods or beans are massive and can grow to a length of up to 1m but more commonly, most are around 30-40 cms. Surrounding the inedible black seeds is a very sweet, thick white juicy pulp that tastes very much like vanilla ice cream hence its name Ice Cream Bean.
The tree has the added advantage of being a nitrogen fixing plant with nitrogen filled nodules or balls, on its roots and is a good choice as a fast growing beautiful shade tree. Also a great climbing tree for all ages.
Over the last 10 years it has gained great popularity in Australia as a nitrogen fixing tree that produces large velvety pods filled with creamy sweet flesh and also as a great shade tree.
